The Cherokee

Harvey Chaffin - Guitar,vocals
Jim Monigold - Bass,vocals
Tim (Beau) Powell - Drums,vocals

The Cherokee were from Salinas,CA and consisted of the same three members as The Beau Gents. They had relocated to southern California and were building a following when they were discovered by Larry Welk, son of band leader Lawrence Welk, and were signed to Welks Ranwood record label. They recorded a cover of The Who's "I Can't Reach You" which rocked harder than the original with the three band members being augmented with horns and a professional production. They took liberties with the B side "Willie And The Hand Jive" and created a unique version with some killer fuzz guitar and a rave up in the middle.Harvey said the record started to take off but the label didn't know how to promote it.The fact that it was the first rock record on the label didn't help either. They continued to play together under different band names such as The Lavender Blues,Beau Gents and The Shaggywags.

Special thanks to Wanda Lou Chaffin Erwin for the great pictures
